There are several species of Cockroaches common to Kansas.  The most common are German (Kitchen) Roaches, Oriental Roaches, American Roaches and Wood Roaches.

  • American roaches most live in steam tunnels and similar environments, so they are unlikely to be in your structure.

  • Oriental roaches are common to Kansas and live in the soil outside our houses and businesses.  They are 1/2" to 1 1/2" long with shiny dark, dark brown coloring.  They also do not have "wings", so they are smooth in apprearance.  They feed on decaying organic matter and usually enter holes in the foundation or siding.  They are comonly found near moist conditions and behind insulation in basements and crawl spaces.  Rarely are they found in attics. Oriental roaches usually produce eggs only twice a year or so.  Control is usually not difficult.

  • German roaches are the ones we find in our kithcens and bthrooms.  They are rarely larger than 3/4" long and are almond shaped. They also have two "racing stripes" on the top of their heads or protonum which are pretty easy to see with the naked eye.  We usually get them from someone else who has them.  They originated in tropical rain forests and do not in most cases live outside in Kansas.  German roaches can reproduce four weeks after emerging form the egg capsule (ootheca), and every four weeks after that.  We have several tools we can use to get rid of these unwanted guests.

  • Wood roaches are very similar in color and shape to the German roach.  Wood roaches are a little longer and thinner than German roaches and do not have the "racing stripes" on their heads (protonum).  They live in wood piles and under leaf litter, mulch and other high moisture environments.  Wood roaches are not difficult to control if you call us - 785-357-4242.
