Fleas
Here are some things to remember about fleas. Fleas have four life-cycle stages. Egg, larvae, pupa and adult. Fleas change life-cycle stages every 7-10 days. When an egg hatches, the larvae feed on blood meal excreted by the adult fleas and stay deep in the carpet or cracks in the floor. The pupa stage, where the larvae changes into an adult flea inside of a cocoon, is difficult but not impossible to treat. The "trigger" that tells an adult flea still inside of it's "cocoon" to exit is vibration. Vibration of the floor tells a mature flea in a cocoon that there is a host available to feed on. Fleas can live in a pupa cocoon for up to a year before exiting.
DO NOT PURCHASE FOGGERS OR BOMBS TO TREAT FOR FLEAS!
Foggers only kill while the fog is in the air. Once it dissipates, the flea killing power is gone. In order to effectively eliminate fleas, an adult flea killer must be accompanied by a growth regulator that stops the larvae from reaching reproductive maturity. Killing adult fleas is only part of the answer. Stopping fleas from breeding in your house or business is also necessary for an effective flea treatment.
It is essential to have your cats and/or dogs on a flea prevention program.
Treating the yard for fleas should be part of any flea infestation treatment.
Fleas usually originate from nuisance wildlife that travel through our yards at night and drop fleas that are already on them. Occasionally, our pets can get fleas while visiting neighbors or friends who have infested pets or yards.
