"It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer."—— Albert Einstein

"A mouse can squeeze through a hole the size of a pencil diameter. So if you've got a quarter-inch gap underneath your door, as far as a mouse is concerned, there's no door there at all."

—— PMP columnist Tom Green, president of the Integrated Pest Management Institute North America

I recently received a call for bed bug service.  The person said they "acquired" the infestation while their bags were on an airplane.  We need to be very careful where we put our baggage, especially in hotels that do international business.

Here are some tips:

1.  DO THIS FIRST BEFORE BRINGING ANY PERSONAL ITEMS INTO THE ROOM -Always check the seams and mattress piping in your hotel room for small red or black splotches.  If you see them, immediately remove your personal items from the room and ask for a different room. Do some research on what Bed Bugs look like and what size they are.  Remember - The first "hatchlings" of Bed Bugs are not visible because they appear "clear" to the naked eye.

2. If you cannot find a room without the red splotches, ask the hotel to refund your money and go somewhere else.

If you have to move to another hotel, it is better than bringing home bed bugs.  They are VERY expensive and time consuming to eradicate.  Bed bugs feed to change "instar" states.

3. Never put your personal belongings in the dressers or chests at the hotel, leave them in your own bags.  Keep your bags zipped shut when you are not accessing them.

And,

4. ALWAYS check your belongings and bags CAREFULLY for any sign that there are bed bugs present.  If you find some and have a deep freezer place the items in there for several days and call an exterminator that specializes in bed bugs.

"We should not be surprised at the bed bug resurgence, we should be amazed that we managed a 50-year reprieve."
